Comfortably Numb

Last night, Damian and I went to the Royal Albert Hall to see David Gilmour, the gig i've looked forward to more than any other.

It was, needless to say, glorious. We had front-of-box seats and so had a great view, looking down into the arena area, and across to our left, the stage.

The first half opened up with some Dark Side of the Moon tracks (Breathe/Time/Breathe (Reprise)), followed by the whole of On an Island. Then I Closed My Eyes featured Robert Wyatt on cornet, and very good he was too!

Messrs David Crosby and Graham Nash provided great back-ups as they have all tour, and were very clearly enjoying it, and grooving away during the guitar breaks (OK, Graham was grooving, I don't think David moves quite like that anymore!)

The second half was, of course, made up of Pink Floyd classics.

  • Shine On You Crazy Diamond (parts 1-5) which is always an emotional piece that the audience loved

  • Fat Old Sun - Great to hear this live, it's always been one of my favourites, and always seems to be under-rated

  • Arnold Layne (NOT featuring David Bowie as happened the previous night!) - Brilliant to hear this, and gave the night proper appreciation to the genius of Syd

  • Coming Back To Life and High Hopes - Couple of good solid Gilmour Floyd songs, as good as any he did i suppose, with the exception of Sorrow

  • The Great Gig In The Sky featuring Mica Paris doing a wonderful job.

  • Echoes - They played all 20 odd minutes of it as a finale. Such a brilliant piece of music.

  • Encores:

  • Wish You Were Here - inevitably the big sing-along song that everyone got wholeheartedly stuck into

  • Find The Cost Of Freedom - the only non-Floyd sond of the second half. A Crosby/Nash song, which was just them and David a capella. Wonderful harmonies between the three of them that had everybody entraptured.

  • Comfortably Numb - the show-stopper supreme and probably my favourite Floyd song, and certainly favourite Gilmour solo. Just perfect ending to a perfect night!

Glad it lived up to your expectations Dave. Blimey, what a setlist they did. Some unusual ones there too which adds to the magic of the night. I really should keep my ear to the ground and hope he does some more some other time.
